Industry overview:

Engineering is the discipline and profession of applying technical, scientific and mathematical knowledge in order to use natural laws and physical resources to help design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems, and processes that safely realize a desired objective. Engineering, being a diversified subject can be categorized into varied branches like Aeronautical Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Textile Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Mining Engineering etc.

Eligibility:

To be eligible to attain B.E or B.Tech degree, one must have cleared the 12th std. board exam with at least 50% marks (60% for IITs) in the science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Maths as compulsory subjects. For a master's level degree i.e. M.E or M.Tech, one must have completed the bachelor's degree program successfully.Further studies up to Ph.D. level are also an option for anyone interested in Research or Academics. There is also the Associate Membership Examination of the Institute of Engineers (AMIE), which enables working people in the private and public sector, or diploma holders to acquire a Bachelor's engineering degree through distance education.

There is a joint Entrance exam of the IITs (IITJEE) for admission to the Institutes of Technology (IITs) at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee and Guwahati, and the Institute of Technology (BHU) at Varanasi. The All-India Engineering Entrance exam (AIEEE) for admission to the National Institutes of Technology (formerly Regional Engineering Colleges), which offer civil engineering.For postgraduate admissions, the IITs admit students on the basis of the Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineers (GATE).GGSIPU (Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha University) conducts Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission to different engineering, technological and scientific disciplines. There are other hundreds of engineering colleges in all states in the country.. Various polytechnics offer diploma in various disciplines of engineering for that one must have cleared the 10th Std. board exam successfully with at least 50% marks. For a diploma in engineering, one must clear the 10th Std. board exam successfully with at least 50% marks in the science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Maths as compulsory subjects.
Job Prospects & Remuneration:

Job prospect in engineering is very high and rewarding. Engineering degree opens floodgates to many diverse careers. Every year this sector has provided enough employment opportunities. The government is now expanding capacity in educational institutions. The number of IIT’s has doubled - seven new have come up. According to 2008 National Knowledge Commission Report engineering institutes in India had 5,00,000 seats in Bachelors programmes and about 30,000 in Masters and fewer than 1000 in PhD. 

Starting salary for a fresher has been around Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000 per month in public and private sector. Senior engineers can earn anywhere in between Rs 33,000 and Rs 50,000 a month. Those at management levels can earn up to Rs 65,000 or even more.With more experience or as an established independent consultant one could earn even more.
