Industry overview:

Interior designing is a profession concerned with walls, windows, doors, finishes, textures, light, furnishings and furniture etc using all these elements interior designers develop a functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing space for a building's user. It is basically an art of developing interiors, which are aesthetically appealing, technically sophisticated and satisfying the needs of the customer. It also involves aspects of environmental psychology, architecture and product design. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the Interrior design industry has gone from an unrecognized offshoot of the architectural profession to a booming industry in its own right. Prior to twentieth century, interior design was the function of architects and craftsman; interior design as profession did not exist. People of that time wanted to build normal house without much care for the furnishings, paint colour, use of artifacts, the wall hangings, the in-house gardens, etc..Today the culture has almost completely changed. People care more about the design of their doors, the colour of their Walls, the design of their reading room, etc. This need has created substantial number of opportunities for young and dynamic minds to take up a career in Interior designing. The current generation needs to take up these opportunities which have become a need for even a common man.

Interior Designers are responsible for the selection and arrangement of colors, furniture and lighting in a given space in order to affect its functions, safety and general aesthetics. Traditionally, interior designers only focused on the decorating aspect of the room; however, the profession has evolved, and interior designers of today are now responsible for much more such as architectural detailing (crown molding, built-in cabinetry) and ground up remodeling as part of their services. . Designers can specialize in different niches. Healthcare, hospitality, office planning, space planning are all examples of specialized niches of the industry. Specialization can be done in given below segments for better prospects:
  • Residential designers: Involved in new home construction and renovations
  • Entertainment designers: Create interiors for theaters, clubs, restaurants, concert halls, pubs, theme parks and other entertainment venues.
  • Institutional designers: Focus on projects such as childcare, educational and religious institutions.
  • Health care designers: Create environments for hospitals, clinics, examination rooms, surgical suites, mobile units and health care facilities.
  • Office designers: Focus on the special needs of the work environment, such as ergonomic design, lighting and acoustical requirements as well as space planning.
  • Retail designers: Involved in commercial spaces such as boutiques, department stores, showrooms, and shopping malls.
As it is a service profession, interior designers’ fortunes depend on their ability to satisfy clients. Thus, they must understand artistic and technical requirements of a project, interpersonal communication, and management strategies.As is the case with any career, the practice of interior design can be rewarding and fulfilling if hard work prevails. Excelling at interior design requires energy, technical proficiency, vision and dedication.
Eligibility:

To do a diploma in interior design, you need to have finished 10+2 in any discipline. You can enroll at Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) that offers postgraduate programmes in urban design, landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, environmental planning, housing, construction and project management. These are recognised by the All India Council of Technical Education (AISCTE).

Job Prospects & Remuneration:

In our country there has been a huge increase in the demand for professional designers in all areas of construction - houses, bungalow, malls, apartments, villas, companies, Exhibitions etc. Industry experts say there is a dearth of good interior designers. The boom in retail sector has created more demand for trained & professional interior designers. The job market for interior designers looks upbeat and positive, with the rising demand for professional design of private homes, offices, restaurants, retail businesses, and retirement and nursing homes. However, interior designing has become a highly competitive field with many young, dynamic and talented designers. So it becomes necessary aspiring candidate to keep themselves updated with the latest trends and innovations so as to maintain a competitive edge.

 Interior Designers can find employment with architects or architectural firms, builders, public works department, hotel and resort chains, hospitals, town planning bureau, regional and metropolitan development works, private consultancies, studios and theaters and exhibition organizers etc.

Interior design is an immensely rewarding profession. Earnings for interior designers varies widely depending on the type of design they do. Earnings for beginers can range from , Rs. 5000 to Rs. 8000 while established designers gets Rs.50,000 to Rs. 75,000.. Some established designers working with big clients earn six figure salaries whereas some small-scale freelancers hardly earn enough to stay in business.

1. Exterior - Interiors, F-12, Kalkaji, New Delhi - 110019. It offers a one-year National Diploma course in Interior Design in collaboration with Jensen & Nicholson and Computer Aided Design by Edit Institute, Mumbai. The other centres are in Bangalore, Calicut, Calcutta, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, Mumbai and Pune.
2. School of Interior Design, Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT), Kasturbhai Lalbhai Campus, University Road, Ahmedabad 380009 is the first of its kind to provide a full- fledged 5-year professional programme in Interior Design.
3. Apeejay Institute of Design, (affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar), 54 Tughlakabad Institutional Area, M.B. Road, near Batra Hospital, New Delhi-110062 offers: 4-year Bachelor of Design, with specialisation options in Fashion Design, Textile Design, Ceramic Design (under the broad discipline of Product Design) and Graphic Design and Interior Design (under the umbrella of Visual Communication)

4. School of Interior Design, Institute of Environmental Design, near Bhaikaka Library, Vallabh Vidyanagar- 388120 offers 5-year full-time Interior Design open to students with Plus two Science with minimum 50% (Gujarat Board); 55% for any other Board
 
5. Polytechnic for women, Lajpat Nagar-1V, New Delhi - 110024 (www.polytechnic-sdpw.com) offer interior designing course in one, two, three or four-year full- time programme.
 
6. National Institute of Fashion Design, NIFD Campus, 2-B, Madhya Marg, Sector 27, Chandigarh - 160 019. Website: www.nifd.net. It offers a 3-year B.Sc. in interior designing, a 2-year advance diploma, a one-year diploma, a one-year professional course and a six-month vocational programme. The eligibility is 10+2 or its equivalent.
 
 
7. Anima Institute of Fashion, 1, Shambhu Nath Pandit street, Culcutta - 700020; Apeejay Institute of Design, 54, Tughlakabad, Institutional Area, Mehrauli Badarpur Road, New Delhi - 110 062 (affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar). It offers a four and one-year course in graphic and furniture design. The eligibility for the four-year course is Class XII while you should have completed graduation for the one-year programme.

It offers a one-year course in Interior Decoration and Design and the eligibility is Class XII or its equivalent.

13. KaravaliCollege, Mangalore - 575006. Website: www.karavalicollege.ac.in. It offers a B.Sc. in Interior Design and Decoration as three-year regular programme. The eligibility is 10+2.
 
14. School of Interior Design, Mumbai - 400 025. It offers a three-year part-time diploma course (affiliated to the Maharashtra Board of Technical Education) at the School of Interior Design, a four-year full-time BFA (Applied Art) degree course (affiliated to University of Mumbai) at College of the Applied Art and Craft.
