In this era of booming economy, growing consumerism, media and mall mania, coupled with fast growth of the fashion industry have led modeling rise to prominence and develop into a thriving industry. Modeling attracts a large number of youngsters, both females and males as a career option. As Modeling is also considered as a gateway for entry to the film industry, the competition in the modeling career is also very high. Modeling as a profession attracts males and females equally, though there was a time when females dominated it, and still they have better opportunities than their male counterparts. This is largely due to the fact that men's fashion and fragrance markets are considerably smaller than the women's. Modelling offers tremendous opportunities to travel and meet various classes of people. Moreover once established it is a highly paid job. Even with all these plus points it involves lot of hard work, dedication and perseverance to be successful in this field. It is a highly competitive and short- lived career. Further, stress factor is high and the hours are erratic. There is no specific qualification or age limit to enter into this field. First step for making an entry is to prepare a portfolio. This consists of a series of photographs taken by a professional photographer. The portfolio can then be shown to an advertising agency, a model co-ordinating agency providing suitable models according to requirements, or a fashion designer. Another way to enter into this career is to apply for the contests sponsored by magazines, cloth manufactures, cosmetic companies etc and participating in beauty pageants. Well-proportioned physique, teeth and good hair. Attitude, self-confidence, determination and stamina are all the things required for modeling. A photographic model would need to be photogenic as well as have the right height and vital statistics. Girls aspiring to be fashion models should ideally be above 5' 7" or 5' 8" in height and the perfect 10 in vital statistics with good hair and skin, expressive eyes, even teeth with a complete lack of self-consciousness. Boys should be at least 5' 10" tall , with clear complexion, straight carriage, well-proportioned physique , even teeth and good hair. Attitude, self-confidence, determination and stamina are very important. As the emphasis moved away from formal poses, a model had to be able to move well and be spontaneous in front of the camera |

A model can explore job opportunities in product advertising, Featuring in music videos, Doing live fashion shows, Showroom displays or garment fairs, Opening a school for models, Setting up a model co-ordinating agency, Acting in television programmes or films etc. Modeling believed to the gateway to bollywood. This is often a short-lived career but with right approach a model could get rich quick and stay around for a comparatively long time by selecting the right kind of work, spacing out ad campaigns to avoid overexposure. A model's fees depend upon his / her ratings, experience and the state of the fashion / advertising business. Models in India are usually paid for an entire campaign or for the duration of the contract, except for fashion shows and catalogues where they are paid on day-to-day basis. A top model's fee for a show could be upward of Rs 25,000 or lakhs of rupees for an ad campaign. Low budget shows pay models somewhere around Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000. Print ads pay according to the number of photographs used. Magazine spreads and billboard advertisements also pay well reputed magazines paying around Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per photograph. |
