Physiotherapy/Physical Therapy is a health care profession and a therapeutic treatment concerned with prevention, treatment and management of movement disorders arising from conditions and diseases occurring throughout the lifespan. Physiotherapy is the system of treatment of disease and disability using physical exercises. Physiotherapist provides services to individuals and populations to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout life. This includes providing services in circumstances where movement and function are threatened by aging, injury, disease or environmental factors. The job of a physiotherapist are preventive, restorative and rehabilitative and they perform a history and physical examination, conduct assessments to determine a diagnosis process, select appropriate physical therapy interventions to treat the dysfunction, and monitor the effectiveness of treatment. Physiotherapists use various therapeutic intervention techniques to treat a patient. Physiotherapy has many specialties including cardiopulmonary, geriatrics, neurologic, orthopaedic and pediatrics to name some of the more common areas. Physiotherapy involves the treatment of patients through exercise therapy and other therapeutic agents, including heat radiations, electricity, sound water and message, and is used to cure weak muscles, difficulties in the movement of shoulder and knee joints, paralysis, inborn and acquired deformities, gynecological ailments and other such disorders. Patients with such problems are referred by medical practitioners to physiotherapists who then take on the responsibility of restoring them to health. Physiotherapist practice in many settings, such as outpatient clinics or offices, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, extended care facilities, private homes, education and research centers, schools, hospices, industrial workplaces or other occupational environments, fitness centers and sports training facilities. |
