One either joins the Indian armed forces to qualify for the rank of an officer or one opts for other ranks. For officers, there is a Permanent Commission - A Permanent Commission means a career in the Army till one retires. One has to join the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Pune or the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun for a permanent commission - and then there is the Short Service Commission (SSC)
National Defence Academy
Date of Examination : The examination conducted by UPSC is held twice a year in the months of April and September for which the notification is published in the Employment News in November and April respectively.
Eligibility :
1. Army Wing of NationalDefenceAcademy : 12th Class pass of the 10 +2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
2. For Air Force and Naval Wings of National Defence Academy : 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
Pattern of Examination :
You will appear for two papers comprising Mathematics and General Ability of 300 and 600 marks respectively. Both papers have objective type multiple choice questions. The duration for each paper is 2-1/2 hours.
The Mathematics paper consists of Arithmetic, Mensuration, Algebra, Geometry, Trignometry and Statistics. The General Ability paper is divided into two parts :
- Part A : English Usage (Maximum Marks 200)
- Part B : General Knowledge (Maximum Marks 400)
In addition to interview there are Intelligence Test (verbal and non-verbal),Group Tests (group discussions, group planning, out-door group tasks) and Brief lectures on specified subjects.
COMBINED DEFENCE SERVICES EXAMINATION (C.D.S.)
This examination is conducted by UPSC twice a year in May and October for which the notification is published in the \'Employment News\' in November and April respectively.

Educational Qualification
1. For IMA and Officers\' TrainingAcademy : Degree of a recognised University or equivalent
2. For Naval Academy : B.Sc. with Physics and Mathematics
3. For AirforceAcademy : Degree of a recognised University or equivalent with Physics and/or Maths as subjects. Candidates who have passed their degree examination with subjects other than Physics and/or Maths are also eligible provided they have passed their Higher Secondary Examination or 12th standard examination under the 10+2 system or an equivalent examination with Mathematics and Physics, as subjects of the examination.
Age :
- IMA : Unmarried male candidates. 18 years to 23 years
- NavalAcademy : Unmarried male candidates. 18 years to 21 years.
- AirforceAcademy : Unmarried male candidates. 18 years to 22 years
- Officers\' Training : Male candidates (married or Academy bachelor). 18 years to 24 years

Recruitment in Army for Other Ranks is broad based. Every male citizen, irrespective of caste, class, religion and domicile, is eligible for recruitment in the Army, provided the person meets the laid down age, educational, physical and medical standards.
For Engineering Graduate – There is direct SSB interview and other eligibility criteria includes engineering degree in notified discipline , 20-27 years of age at the time of joining etc. Commencement of course is January and July every year. For Final and pre-final year students of engineering course there is campus interview and SSB interview and age at the time of joining should be – 19-25 years (final year engineering students ) and 18-24 years (pre-final year engineering students ) .
For 10+2 PCM -- They can apply directly to the Recruitment Directorate. They should be 10+2 Pass with aggregate; age should be 161/2-191/2 years at the time of joining etc. Month of commencement of course is January and July.
Short Services Commission (SSC)
The Short Services Commission (SSC) allows candidates to serve for a period of five years. Once the tenure is over, one can opt for a Permanent Commission. Alternatively, one can also choose for a 5 year extension and can choose to resign from one's post any time during this period.
There are four modes of entry to the SSC.:---
1.There is the Direct Entry scheme for Graduates who have completed a recognized degree after that one has to appear for the Combined Defence Exam (CDSE) and then appear for the UPSC and SSB interview.
2. For technical post , one should be be between 20 and 27 years old and needs to have completed an engineering degree. One has to appear for an SSB interview after that.
3. In the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Special Entrance Scheme for entry to the SSC, one needs to be a graduate with 50% aggregate marks, two years' service in NCC Senior Division Army with minimum 'B' Grade in 'C' Certificate Exam. One needs to be between 19 and 25 years old in May. One only has to appear for an SSB interview in this method of entry.
4. The only section for women in the Indian Army is that of officers in the SSC. One needs to be between 19 and 27 years old and needs to have at least a graduate degree. One only has to appear for the SSB interview.
