Industry overview:

Sports in India have evolved into a viable alternative from a recreational activity to a full-fledged career option. Today sports career have become both lucrative and challenging one and is also fast catching up with the youths as a preferred career choice. The National Sports Policy is a key initiative by the government to promote sports in the country. The Department of Youth Affairs and Sports in the Ministry of Human Resources and The Sports Authority of India (SAI) have been established to encourage talented youth to pursue it as a career. There is wide variety of sports job open with us if we have abiding interest in games and sportsmanship. Even if your own playing days are over you can still stay involved and make a career in it. There are a number of sports which are played and followed with equal passion. The national sports of India are Hockey which is an exciting game where India has won many laurels. Besides hockey there is many popular sports in India such as Cricket, Tennis, Chess, Badminton, Boxing, Wrestling to name a few. Cricket, however remains the dominating sport in India and has the largest following amongst the other Indian sports and surpassing even the national sports hockey. However, there has been lot of focus towards the upliftment of the other sports in India by the respective sports councils.

  A great thing about sports jobs is that they're so broad a field; you can apply all kinds of skills or specialties in which you have skills. That means you need to acquire those specialized skills, whether in medicine, law, business, computer technology or something else. So your schooling and your athletics career path may take a long time to get you to that sports job of your dreams.

Talent is the most important requirement though the coaches and the physical instructors need to have professional qualifications also.

Job Prospects & Remuneration:

Natural talent and dedication are two of the main attributes required to make a successful sport person- be it a player or a coach. One, in addition should have the enthusiasm for the game, a sporting spirit and   mental and physical stamina. Coaches and Physical Education Instructors also need to have good communication skills and ability to motivate. Trained coaches are in demand at all the training centers set up by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and by state and central sports bodies. Coaches can also find openings in sports clubs, schools and colleges and as in-house coaches for corporate sports teams. Career in sports can be broadly categorized into three areas viz,

Professional/Amateur players

Umpires/referees, coaches and physical education teachers
 
Administrators and officials
 
Many players combine two of the above areas together, while some, after their career as an active sportsperson is over, become coaches or administrators. Related areas are sports medicine, sports journalism, leisure and adventure sports, fitness and health etc.
