The profession of Video Jockey found its popularity in the year 1980 thanks to the Music Television Network, MTV. It is believed that the term” Video Jockey” has been coined from the term “Disc Jockey” that was already in vogue year ago. With the advent of various music channels on TV, Video jockeying is becoming an exciting career option for the music crazy generation. A VJ or video jockey is the one who introduces, announces and plays videos on commercial music television i.e. the medium must be audio and visual both. Technically, the job of the VJ is to introduce music videos and host music related shows. However, VJs do more than just that. They chat with the public, host game shows and do celebrity interviews as well. VJs must constantly keep up-to-date on the latest trends in music, all the latest videos and information about music stars and other celebrities. In that sense, they take upon a more journalistic role. With the explosion of satellite television channels, the profession is fast attracting a number of young people into its fold.

No specific educational background or formal training is required to be a VJ, except some personal attributes. However a background in mass communication, visual communication or the performing arts comes in handy.The candidate is generally recruited after a screen-test by the prospective employers as the candidate’s screen presence matters a lot.

VJs are mainly employed by Music channels, Producers of music shows and film based programmes. There are ample avenues in this field as the ongoing boom in the music and entertainment channels shows. A VJ can diversify into many related fields like game-shows, quiz-shows; television soaps films PR & modeling etc. Beginners get around Rs.10, 000 to Rs.15, 000 per month and if they become popular their salary keeps multiplying and with some experience and real talent, one can surely hope to rise quickly in this profession.
